		<description>“Geno(v)a: Developing and rebooting a waterfront city”NAi, 2004 EditorISBN: 90-5662-279-

As new. In 1996 the North Italian port city of Genoa invited a team of internationally renowned architects including Rem Koolhaas, Manuel de Solà-Morales, Marcel Smetsand Bernardo Secchi to draw up a masterplan for that city. This phase was followed by a competition to redesign an ancient pier in its port. The brief for the Ponte Parodi once again brought a galaxy of big architectural names to Genoa amongst whom MVRDV, UN Studio, Foreign Office Architects, OMA, Arup Associates, David Chipperfield, Dominique Perrault and Bernard Tschumi. UN Studio (Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos) won the competition with a project for a threedimensional plaza which was to provide both port and city with a new heart.

This book presents and analyses the various projects and paints a picture of the most important designers working today. A number of critics simultaneously put the context of both design stages in perspective: can a city like Genoa take part in the race of increasing globalization and city branding? And what part can architects play in this debate? From economy, sociology, history, urbanism and architecture the whys and hows of a city with ambitions are examined.

In 2013, the European Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award-&#38;nbsp; turned 25. In this long period there have been 13 editions of the Prize which reviewed 2.478 works of architecture, 1.073 cities and 1.505 architecture studios.

The aim of the Prize is to acknowledge architecture quality in reference to universal values of generic designs, independently of their programs. The term “generic” refers to the essence of things, not their formal values, while “quality” standards include the ideas, values and development of the projects, embracing research, experimentations, social environment impact.

One of the features of this new stage of the Prize is the conviction that in order to understand the situation in European contemporary architecture every two years, it is essential to be familiar with all the mentioned works.

This conviction has led us to publish, for the first time, all the nominated works (420) for this year’s Prize.

The Explosion of the city

Morpholigies, Observations and Motions within recent territorial transformations in the South Europe Urban Regions.
The current configurations f the urban regions in the South of Europe are consequences of the process of “explosion of the city” that has occurred in the last three decades in the western societies. This process involves and increase in urban dynamics and their diffusion through diverse territories. Thus territories acquire metropolitan characteristics in terms of use of space, land and energy comsumption, functional structure, spatial morphologies, etc..
The morphological realities if these territories are presented along with some selective observations of social behavior in the new settings for urban life.

Concept design of the Exhibition at Architectural Association of Barcelona (COAC) 2004.

The exhibition presents the research papers of thirteen international university research teams on their respective regions. The papers address the current spatial configuration, the causes or engines of transformation and their relation to regional polices or to urban planning.

Commemorating the 25th anniversary of the “European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award” is tantamount to celebrating the achievement of having reached the present day with our enthusiasm for fostering innovation and quality in architecture entirely intact. On the other hand, however, it is also calls for an exercise in retrospective meditation and a necessary reflection that will enables s to continue for a further 25 years rewarding architecture’s ability to understand the circumstances of the moment and exploit them at the service of a society in constant evolution.

Architecture in Europe represents not only a rich heritage, but it is also a vibrant part of the cultural and creative sectors. Architecture provides some of the most beautiful examples of creativity in many respects – conceptual, technical, and in terms of innovation. It moreover brings about significant economic benefits. It directly employs more than half million people, while over 12 million are more employed in the construction industry. And to put these figures into a broader perspective, the cultural and creative industries in the European Union as a whole contribute up to 4.5% of EU GDP and employ more than 8 million people.

Train01, co-founder architect firm, selected for this book.

As a land that celebrates both the ancient verities and cutting-edge design, Italy presents the perfect incubator and a challenging minefield for contemporary architectural projects. Here, some of the most innovative firms, designers, and thinkers in the field, whether armed with CAD software or cameras, generate new initiatives that are crossing strict cultural divisions of disciplines and promoting interchange among differing contexts.
This book covers recent projects exploring those interconnections by firms like IaN+, a Rome-based office whose Goethe House in Tokyo changes to adapt to use; Gabriele Basilico, the award-winning photographer whose work records urban boundary zones where old and new merge, such as vacant factories, discarded commercial buildings, and abandoned housing blocks; Stalker, a radical architectural and urban research collective that grew out of the Italian student movements of the early 1990s; and other groups and artists like Multiplicity, Armin Linke, Avatar, Nunzio Battaglia, Fabrizio Leoni, and Dap Studio.
